A Sunny Hello from Stella Maris – and “Best Fishes” for the New Year to all of our Fishing Friends!

Sorry …we are long overdue with our New Year’s wishes …but you all know our pace here in the islands is little slower – so please forgive us!

We thought you might enjoy a little update as we go into our very busy winter and spring fishing season – the forecast is fabulous and we are especially excited to see so many return anglers coming back to fish with us this winter and spring!

 

Times are changing everywhere, and here too! While most anglers are still more of the adventurous type, their expectations are by today’s standards a little more sophisticated than was in the past. The best of service is expected, high quality boats and equipment – and rightly so at today’s prices … and we can deliver! We pride ourselves in offering the best of the best! The best flats fishing boats on the market today, the latest technology rods and reels that are available for sale in our fly shop – our secrete flies that we know work well on our type of “flat” “bottom and of course, not to forget and most important – the guiding reputation of our very own Docky Smith as being one of the “BEST” in the Bahamas!

Back in the days ….fly fishing for Bones was always viewed as “a distinguished gentleman’s” sport! Well, times are changing in this area too …more and more women are angling and hooking their teeth into the art of fly fishing – as well as many, many young folks and this change is very refreshing. Young people are really getting into this sport and loving it! And, well, what’s not to love? It’s exciting fighting the fish – one can be out on the water all day enjoying the beautiful Bahama flats, the warmth of the sunshine – whilst grounding friendships with angling buddies and building new friendships with the guides! It is a sport for everyone ….old and young! We have been preaching this for years!

 

Water temps right now are quite cool and ot the larger Bones are out there stalking our flats again. Just the other day – we fished a school of at least 1000 Bones and it was clear to distinguish a pack of big fish within the school of smaller Bones. This makes casting a dream – as one can target the fish that one wants …and, we all want that handsome big Bonefish! Average “big” Bones now on the flats can be around seven and eight pounds - and those are good sized Bahama Bones!

 

So if you are thinking about a trip – don’t wait too long. Fishing schedules are tight straight into May with only a few openings left, we highly recommend that you pre-reserve your fishing days well in advance!
